John Duval is among Australia's most illustrious winemakers. As many will know, he was at Penfolds for 29 years from 1974, becoming Chief Winemaker in 1986 and leaving to set up John Duval Wines in 2002. He was the third, after Max Schubert and Don Ditter, to have responsibility for Grange, and is also the man behind RWT Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon and several other Penfolds wines. He was named International Winemaker of the Year in 1989 (IWSC London) and Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge (London) in 1991 and again in 2000. Plexus is the inaugural 'John Duval' wine. It entered Langton's Classification in 2014, as soon as it became eligible (after 10 vintages), reflecting the immediate support it gained in the auction market. Duval says, "Many people were expecting me to make small volumes of high end Shiraz. But in a region that boasts the oldest Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre vines in the world, I decided to focus on this famous Barossa Valley blend." Plexus is typically 50% Shiraz, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre (Mataro) – Shiraz for structure and a core of blackberry fruit; Grenache for aromatics and texture; Mourvèdre for savoury–spicy and earthy notes. "Plexus is a respectful, elegant expression of very old Barossa Valley vineyards," John Duval.
