Philip Shaw 'The Idiot Shiraz' 2016*

The grapes for 'The Idiot' Shiraz were grown at relatively high altitude, 900 metres, which can make ripening a challenge, or in this case, it can make for some of the most desirable Shiraz fruit aromas and characters, due to the higher acid levels in the grapes. This wine has a real clarity and brightness about it, not only in the colour of the wine but also the taste. When writers talk about 'cool climate elegance' this is what they mean, a good density of fruit supported by the right amount of oak, not unlike the wines from the Northern Rhone in France.

Region - Orange, NSW.

Variety - Shiraz.

Style/Palate - Medium bodied, 12 months oak.

Cellaring - Drink now or up to 10 years after release.

Winemaking - The grapes were destemmed before they were crushed and fermented with indigenous yeast from the vineyard and the winery. The wines were left on their skins for up to a month and then drained directly to older oak barrels to impart softer oak characters. The wine was then left on gross lees (the product of fermentation) for up to 12 months before bottling.

"Seems a touch riper in style this vintage which is certainly not a bad thing. Spice is the initial impression, both in the woody (not oaky) and sweeter Asian vein. cardamom and star anise perhaps. Juicy red and black fruit sits in the background on the bouquet, but dominates the palate, providing a medium-bodied wave of bright and breezy flavour.
