Bernard Shurr's 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' was grown on the barren plains of the Plan de Dieu (God’s Plain), in the Rhone Valley. The Plan de Dieu has a winemaking heritage that dates back to the fourteenth century. Deep pebble beds result in rich and powerfully flavoured wines. Organically grown fruit is hand harvested before a traditional vinification using small open fermenters and maturation in two to three year old large format oak for nine months. Bottled without fining and minimal addition of sulphides. This wine has an energetic nose bristling with red fruits, complemented by earthy notes and spices such as clove and nutmeg that are all woven together by fine oak. The palate is medium bodied and shows vibrant berries, spice and fine but chiseled tannin structure. A wine of brightness that displays length and complexity that would partner well with most char-grilled red meats or a pizza.

About Rhone wines & Rhone style blends
The Rhone Valley is one of France's most spectacular wine regions. Set on the banks of the River Rhone, this incredible wine region features The Northern Rhone and The Southern Rhone. In the The Northern Rhone, the only permitted red wine grape is Syrah (Shiraz), whereas The Southern Rhone is mostly known for producing Grenache, with Shiraz and Mourvedre playing a supporting role. Syrah from the Northern Rhone is deeply coloured with high levels of tannin and ripe aromas and flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and black pepper. Grenache from the Southern Rhone can be full-bodied, quite ripe and show spiced red fruit flavours such as cranberry and red plum. It also blends beautifully with Syrah and Mourvedre. Both regions also make beautiful white wines such as Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, as well as dry Rosé. However, the red wines from the Rhone Valley are distinctively powerful and they underpin the reputation of the Rhone Valley, around the world. So too, are the Rhone style red wines that produced in Australia, in regions such as The Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. The Rhone Valley has been a significant source of inspiration to Australian winemakers, who are also known around the world for making powerful Shiraz, Grenache or Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (GSM) blends.

About Cotes du Rhone
Cotes du Rhone is a large appellation, or AOC (Appellation d'Origine Controlee) in the South Rhone, near Avignon in France. The Cotes du Rhone also produces more than half of the wine that is made in the Southern Rhone. Most of these wines are medium bodied, fruity and simple red wines although rose and white wines are also made in this area. There is a hierarchy of appellations in the Cotes du Rhone and there are three tiers to consider. The Cotes du Rhone AOC wines are the entry point for a very drinkable and fruity wine that isn't expensive. The next level up is the Cotes Du Rhone Villages, these wines that must be made from Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz) and Mourvedre, from the named, individual villages along with other specific winemaking requirements. These are more structured wines, apart from the cru wines which are the highest classification in the Cotes du Rhone.
