Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir
Mornington Peninsula
$57.30
Min. Quantity: 3
The Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir has an aromatic and expressive nose that offers black cherry, floral and barrel-derived spice notes, together with layered scents of citrus and lavender. There is a suppleness to the mid-palate, that shows flavours of pomegranate as well as earthier characters. Fine tannin provides structural support, which leads, with length and directness, to an appealing forest fruit and sour cherry finish. This wine will greatly reward mid-term cellaring or would be superb now, with roast duck, mushroom dishes or delicate cheeses such as brie or camembert.
Expert Reviews & Awards
"A tightly wound estate release with perky acidity leading the procession with cranberry tartness, yet super refreshing. Wafts of undergrowth, morello cherries and spices in the mix with restrained tannins. Mostly it needs more time to settle or food as a friend." 90 Points (On the 2021 vintage).
Halliday Wine Companion - July 2023 (JF) — 96 Points
"An altogether stylish pinot noir, supple and long with spicy fine tannins providing the structure for dark fruit to drape itself on. There's a freshness to the wine that is the key to its success." (On the 2018 vintage)
Halliday Wine Companion - August 2020 (JH).
Winemaking Notes
The fruit was fermented in a combination of large-format oak foudre, large-format concrete tanks and stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts, included a proportion of whole bunches and lasted 16 to 18 days. Following fermentation, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques (20% of which were new) and puncheons and underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was 12 months. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
Cellaring Notes
Cellar for up to 7 years from release.

About Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of the world's most loved, light bodied red wines. Pinot Noir can be made into a variety wine styles, from light and fruity styles featuring cherry and strawberry notes to more complex, gamey and earthy styles. Pinot Noir is usually higher in acid and lower in tannin, making it an ideal pairing for lighter, fattier foods duck, cheese and lamb. Often, the region defines the style. Along with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir is the main grape variety in Burgundy, where the cooler climate produces highly prized wines, loved throughout history of drinking wine! Germany is also known for high quality Pinot Noir, produced in the cooler regions of Pfalz and Baden. As well as France and Germany, the 'new world' wine countries such as the USA, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand also produce high quality Pinot Noir. The list of top Pinot Noir regions in the world includes; Sonoma County, Carneros, Santa Barbara County and Oregon (USA), Casablanca (Chile), Walker Bay (South Africa), Marlborough and Central Otago (New Zealand). Australia also has pockets of high quality Pinot Noir in multiple regions but some of the best Pinot Noir wines are made in the Yarra Valley, Tasmania, The Mornington Peninsula and the Adelaide Hills.
Region
About Mornington Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula is an inspiring wine region, known for high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio also grow well in the region's ideal, maritime climate. Located 70 kilometres south of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula is surrounded by three bodies of water (including Port Philip Bay and the Bass Strait), providing ideal cooling breezes (it can be windy at times) and cooler nights that helps the grapes to retain their acidity. The white wines are fragrant and display pure fruit characteristics such as apple, pear and citrus. The Pinot Noir can be either light or more structured, depending on the location of the vineyard and winemaking techniques.
