Opawa Pinot Gris
Marlborough
$23.60
Min. Quantity: 1
The Opawa Pinot Gris, from Marlborough, is a pale lemon color with fragrant aromas of poached pears, orange peel, and light spices. The clean and fresh palate displays citrus characters and a creamy texture, with a crisp and refreshing finish. Opawa Pinot Gris is a versatile food wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes, especially lightly spiced Asian influenced cuisine.
Winemaking Notes
Made from grapes sourced from three Wairau Valley vineyards, the fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning and pressed using a long slow cycle. A cool tank fermentation followed, using an aromatic yeast. After a short period on yeast lees the wine was clarified and filtered prior to bottling.

opawa
OPAWA (or "Ōpaoa" meaning "Smoky River" in Maori).
The Opawa River formed the stony vineyard soils which are responsible for the delicious aromas and flavours in Opawa wines. Today the Opawa River is the habitat for various endangered and endemic NZ birdlife and they are committed to preserving this wetland ecosystem and its inhabitants.
The Opawa river was also fed from the Wairau river until the Wairau plains were developed for agriculture and flood protection measures were put in place, changing the course of the river and leaving part of the old river bed dry. The stony soils are ideally suited for grape vines but not much else. Water drains freely, which grapevines like, and heat is absorbed from the bright Marlborough sunshine during the day, to be radiated back onto the grapes at night.
The vineyard was developed by Nautilus Estate who purchased the land in two parcels in 2001 and 2003. The combined plot is 25 hectares of very stony soil which was wild scrub land before grapevines were planted in surrounding area in the mid 1990s. The vineyard is in a warm, frost free site that ripens early in the season and produces an intensely fruity and fragrant style of wine, with a soft, juicy texture and great overall balance.

About Pinot Grigio/Gris
Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are made from the same grapes, the difference in the way these wines are named, usually indicates the style, or the country that the wine is made in. Pinot Gris/Grigio grapes develop a distinctive pinkish grey colour on their skins when they ripen. 'Gris' is the French word for grey while 'grigio' means grey in Italian. Some of the world's best Pinot Grigio wines are made in north-eastern Italy, at the foothills of the spectacular Italian Alps. The Alps border the wine regions of Alto Adige, Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia. These regions are known for producing high quality Pinot Grigio that is usually dry, light to medium bodied and has a high acidity. This style of Pinot Grigio often shows aromas and flavours of citrus and green fruits. In contrast to Pinot Grigio from Northern Italy, Pinot Gris from Alsace, in Northern France is more full -bodied, rich and textural. The flavour intensity of these wines is also quite pronounced, showing aromas and flavours of dried fruits and honey, at times. High quality Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris is made in Australia, mostly in the cooler regions such as the Adelaide Hills, King Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Orange, the Yarra Valley and Tasmania.

About Marlborough
Marlborough is a majestic wine region, located on New Zealand's South Island. Sauvignon Blanc is the main grape variety, along with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling. Most of the Marlborough vineyards are planted in either the Wairau Valley or the Awatere Valley. Sauvignon Blanc from the Awatere Valley is distinctly herbaceous and has a higher acidity, due to the cooler climate in this valley. Pinot Noir from Marlborough is medium bodied with flavours of cranberry and ripe cherry.
