The Beaujolais wine region is located at the southern end of Burgundy and to the north of Lyon. Beaujolais  is well known for producing light bodied red wines that have delightful, bright red fruit aromas and flavours. Most of the wines in Beaujolais are made from the gamay grape, under the hierarchy of the appellation system in Beaujolais. The wines on the highest tier of the hierarchy are the Beaujolais Crus,  these wines can only be made from one of ten specific appellations. The Beaujolais Crus are more structured and suitable for bottle ageing due to their higher tannins. The next tier are the Beaujolais Villages wines that are made by blending different villages, including the famous Beaujolais Nouveau wines. The Beaujolais Nouveau are made for early drinking and are always released on the third Thursday every November. Finally, the Beaujolais regional wines can be made from any of the vineyards in Beaujolais. These wines are light, bright and fruity, often showing aromas of kirsch, cherries and cinnamon spices.
