Chateau de Coulaine Chinon
Chateau de Coulaine Chinon
Min. Quantity: 1
The Chateau de Coulaine Chinon is made from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, in the Chinon AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlée), which is in the Loire Valley. It is a beautiful, lifted and smooth red wine. Aromas and flavours of raspberry, red cherry and cranberry along with a slight dried herb spiciness and fresh acidity. Lovely subtle oak gives an extra dimension to a very moreish wine. Very easy drinking, this is a crowd pleaser that goes with duck, pork, roasted chicken or rich potato dishes.
Expert Reviews & Awards
"The entry-level cuvée, vinified in cement vats, and in this case bottled in July 2018. It has a quite pretty nose, with plenty of forward fruit, damson and blackcurrant in particular, lifted by a confident seam of leafy freshness. Showing charm and medium-bodied substance on the palate, textured and fresh with bright acidity, it carries a wealth of fruit to echo the nose, all blackcurrant and wild black cherry, leading into a sappy finish. It is bright, with plenty of fruit, but also some old-school style running through its veins. This will drink well over the next two or three years.” 91 points (on the 2017 vintage)

Made from 100% Cabernet Franc. Mostly from younger vines up to about 15 yo, this wine is vinified in cement tanks using indigenous yeast and aged in a combination of large old oak and cement tanks.

Chateau de Coulaine
Château de Coulaine is a family-owned estate rich in viticultural tradition which has been operating continuously since 1300. In the 19th century the estate came to be one of the most notable in Chinon before phylloxera reduced the holdings to just over 1 hectare of Clos de Turpenay. Since 1988, Etienne de Bonnaventure took over the farming of that 1 hectare assuming all viticulture and winemaking responsibilities. He has grown the estate to its current 18 hectares, all situated on Chinon's plateau. Planted mostly with Cabernet Franc (with a little Chenin Blanc making both Chinon Blanc and Touraine Blanc), particular care is taken to re-plant using 'selection massale' techniques, as they have done for generations. The vineyards have been organically farmed since 1997, being the first in the appellation to be certified organic and all grapes are hand-harvested and vinified, following a non-interventionalist path. Coulaine's low yields result in deeply concentrated, savoury and succulent expressions of Cabernet Franc with ripe and polished tannins - a harmonious balance between the traditional and modern worlds.
