The Ocean Eight Pinot Gris displays tangerine, mandarin and green pear on the nose, forming an exotic but fresh, mixture of aromas and flavours. Cool climate freshness and elegance are matched with voluptuous and generous fruit. This wine will continue to reveal richer, oily textures that are associated with barrel fermented Pinot Gris. There are few wines can handle Asian herbs and spices such as ginger, lemongrass, chili and coriander however Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris is the perfect accompaniment. Delicious.
Producer
Ocean Eight
Ocean Eight is owned by the Aylward family. The winery is located at 271 Tucks Road in Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula. All grapes picked for this small production come from the Aylward’s 17 Hectares of vines.
The Mornington Peninsula has become one of the most sought-after regions in Australia for the production of high quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. These are the varieties planted at Ocean Eight’s vineyards. The winery is managed by Michael & Hollie Aylward whose passion originated over a decade ago with a part-time job at the family’s previous winery Kooyong. Ocean Eight has evolved into the couple’s full-time obsession. Whilst the first crops ripened on the vine, to further cultivate their viticultural experience, the Aylward’s embarked on several tours of the renowned vineyards and cellars of the Burgundy region in France. These trips played an important factor in the style of wines now produced at Ocean Eight. This passion-driven endeavour to bring the highest quality wine to the Mornington Peninsula saw Michael win the sought-after Australian “Young Gun of Wine” award in 2011.
When defining what identifies the Ocean Eight wines, Mike Aylward always returns to two ideas he has worked on since the first release wine; how well are they going to match with food and will they best represent the climate and grape growing conditions of the Mornington Peninsula.
The Ocean Eight wines are lean, bright & tight with acid at the finish. These characters help the wines pair with food and age incredibly well. It is no coincidence that these characters are also intrinsic to the cool, maritime conditions of Mornington Peninsula vineyards, where the Aylward’s chose to grow grapes and make wines over 20 years ago.

About Pinot Grigio/Gris
Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are made from the same grapes, the difference in the way these wines are named, usually indicates the style, or the country that the wine is made in.
Pinot Gris/Grigio grapes develop a distinctive pinkish grey colour on their skins when they ripen. 'Gris' is the French word for grey while 'grigio' means grey in Italian.
Some of the world's best Pinot Grigio wines are made in north-eastern Italy, at the foothills of the spectacular Italian Alps. The Alps border the wine regions of Alto Adige, Trentino and Friuli Venezia Giulia. These regions are known for producing high quality Pinot Grigio that is usually dry, light to medium bodied and has a high acidity. This style of Pinot Grigio often shows aromas and flavours of citrus and green fruits.
In contrast to Pinot Grigio from Northern Italy, Pinot Gris from Alsace, in Northern France is more full -bodied, rich and textural. The flavour intensity of these wines is also quite pronounced, showing aromas and flavours of dried fruits and honey, at times.
High quality Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris is made in Australia, mostly in the cooler regions such as the Adelaide Hills, King Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Orange, the Yarra Valley and Tasmania.

About Mornington Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula is an inspiring wine region, known for high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio also grow well in the region's ideal, maritime climate. Located 70 kilometres south of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula is surrounded by three bodies of water (including Port Philip Bay and the Bass Strait), providing ideal cooling breezes (it can be windy at times) and cooler nights that helps the grapes to retain their acidity. The white wines are fragrant and display pure fruit characteristics such as apple, pear and citrus. The Pinot Noir can be either light or more structured, depending on the location of the vineyard and winemaking techniques.
