Radford Dale Vinum Chenin Blanc
Stellenbosch
$23.90
Min. Quantity: 3
The gnarled old bush vines that produce this characterful Chenin Blanc are planted in some of the purest granite soils on the foothills of the magnificent Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. The vines are mainly grown under dry land conditions, meaning they are not irrigated, and therefore their roots plunge metres into the granite subsoil in search of moisture. The altitude of the vineyards, the steep South-East facing slope and the proximity to False Bay mean that these vines are well exposed and cooled by winds that come off the ocean during the long, hot summer. These factors combine to produce a wonderfully fresh and vivacious expression of what often described as, the Cape’s greatest grape, Chenin Blanc. Showing an abundance of white peach, apple and pineapple aromas and flavours, along with a touch of cinnamon that adds to the complexity to this beautiful white wine, the Radford Dale Vinum Chenin Blanc is a great example of a South African Chenin Blanc. This wine also has a bright acidity and a persistent clean, mineral finish. Perfect with shellfish, chicken dishes or salads.
Expert Reviews & Awards
"Offering superb value for money...this is like a scaled-down rendition of Alex Dale's top wines. Taut and refreshing with wild yeast aromas and texture, a hint of oak spice and a core of crisp tangy citrus and green apple fruit" 92 Points (on the 2019 vintage).

Winemaking Notes
The grapes were hand picked and manually sorted to ensure the purity of varietal expression of the Chenin Blanc grapes in the final wine. The grapes underwent gentle de-stemming followed by gentle pressing in a pneumatic press, before settling in stainless steel tanks. Approximately 70% of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, on lees, while 30% was transferred to small Burgundian barrels to undergo natural fermentation. There was also a small portion of skin contact (roughly 14% for 4 days). The winemaker took all of these steps to preserve the freshness of the grapes while also developing the fruit, aromatic intricacy and mineral edge to the wine.

Variety
About Chenin Blanc
Chenin Blanc is a high acid grape variety that can be made into sparkling, dry or even sweet wines. Depending on how ripe the Chenin Blanc grapes are when they are picked, they can be made into sparkling wines (that need higher acidity) or dry wines that have an abundance of ripe fruit characters from using riper grapes. Younger Chenin Blanc wines usually show aromas and flavours of fresh apples and tropical fruit whereas the older Chenin Blanc wines have a more smoky, richer flavour profile. In addition, Chenin Blanc is used to make some of the best dessert wines in the world, again, the combination of high acidity and ripe fruit provides a wine with depth and structure, at the same time. Chenin Blanc is grown around the world but it does particularly well in Australia (Margaret River and McLaren Vale), The USA (California), Argentina (Mendoza) and South Africa (Paarl, Swartland). Chenin Blanc is South Africa's most widely grown grape. Winemakers in South Africa are making complex and concentrated Chenin Blanc wines from old bush vines, that can be aged for decades. Some of the most impressive Chenin Blanc wines come from the Loire Valley in Central France. Climate and soil make a big difference to Chenin Blanc wines and the Loire Valley has a diverse range of both. The appellation of Savennieres produce full bodied, dry Chenin Blanc wines while The Coteaux du Layon appellation makes incredibly good sweet wines that have an abundance of flavour and acidity. The appellations of Vouvray and Saumur produce still and sparkling Chenin Blanc wines. The appellation of Anjou, also in the Loire Valley is known for dry wines that are often matured in oak.
Region
About Stellenbosch
The Stellenbosch wine region in South Africa has earned a reputation for top class red wines such as Syrah, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, that are often made into Bordeaux blends. This impressive wine region is located 50 kilometres west of Cape Town and stretches inland from the coast towards the mountains. The moderate climate and cooling winds from False Bay are ideal for fine wine production. Vineyards that have cooler temperatures can produce high quality Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
