Blue Pyrenees Richardson Cabernet Sauvignon
Pyrenees
$57.30
Min. Quantity: 3
The Blue Pyrenees Richardson series of wines are only produced in highly regarded vintages and they never disappoint. The nose is distinctly Cabernet Sauvignon with blackberry fruit, cassis, oyster shell and sweet oak. The blackcurrant, blackberry and green olive are fruit derived and they have been crafted into a wine of great power by full extraction of colour, flavours, and tannins from the grapes. The integration of all these flavours in French oak also adds to the structure and tannin, creating a long savory aftertaste. Outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.
Expert Reviews & Awards
"Blackcurrant and aniseed characters blend with cedar wood, spearmint and cream. It's both a powerful and compelling presentation of flavours. This is a wine that starts off as medium weight then builds and expands as it breathes, like the swell of a wave as it moves inshore, the result a cohesive crash of fruit, oak and tannin. It's a beauty." (On the 2019 vintage)

Producer
Blue Pyrenees
Blue Pyrenees Estate was established in 1963 by the French company Rémy Martin, who were famous for making Cognac brandy. The brandy was distributed through Australia by another company, and when World War II broke out, the Australian distributors realised they'd have trouble keeping up supplies and made a huge bulk order to see them through. At the end of the war, they sent Rémy Martin a cheque for five years worth of sales, which couldn't have come at a more important time. Being a Cognac company, Rémy Martin was set up to make brandy under the 'Château Rémy' banner. The first vines they planted were ugni blanc, but John Robb – the winery's first manager – began tinkering with famous French varietals like shiraz in a process of trial and error. The rest, as they say, is history. And a fascinating one at that. Château Rémy was renamed Blue Pyrenees Estate in 1982 and was purchased by the long standing central Victorian family the Richmond-Smith's in 2019. They have continued to evolve the winery and the vineyards over the years and are proud to make authentic, world-class wines that do the Pyrenees region justice.

About Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in many of the world’s wine regions, such as the Napa Valley in California, Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand, Colchagua Valley in Chile and Stellenbosch in South Africa. In France, Cabernet Sauvignon is the classic grape of the Haut Medoc, in Bordeaux, and it makes some of the world’s most highly prized and age-worthy wines. The red wines of Bordeaux are mostly a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They are incredible wines, known throughout history as being the pinnacle of red wine making. Cabernet Sauvignon is also found in the Super Tuscan wine blends. In Australia, there are pockets of excellent Cabernet Sauvignon growing in regions such as the Eden Valley or the Adelaide Hills. However, Cabernet Sauvignon really excels in the Yarra Valley, the Margaret River and the Coonawarra. Interestingly, there tends to be a maritime influence in the top Cabernet Sauvignon wine regions. Viticulturalists say that this keeps the vineyards cool enough to retain the acidity in the grapes, while also allowing enough sunshine to develop good fruit flavours and to ripen the grapes. The Coonawarra also has the famous strip of red, ‘terra rossa’ soil, which is ideal for producing intensely flavoured and well structured wines. Australian Cabernet Sauvignon usually shows aromas and flavours such as blackcurrant, black cherry, dark chocolate, mint, black olive, eucalyptus or cassis, in any combination. The wine usually has firm tannins and a good acidity, ideal for helping Cabernet Sauvignon to age well. Overall, Australian Cabernet Sauvignon has a total abundance of flavour and it goes extremely well with prime cuts of beef – on a chilly night.
