Château Mont-Redon will be familiar to those who know and love Châteauneuf-du-Pape being well recognized as the owners of one of the most highly regarded vineyard sites in the appellation. The superb quality of its vineyards has been recognized throughout history and prior to the adaptation of the appellation controlee system it was one of the few ‘Grand Crus’ in the region (together with Chateau Rayas). Of all the Rhone reds, Lirac’, is often seen as the closest in style to Châteauneuf-du-Pape although they are lighter and slightly more ‘fresh. You might already know this but here is map, Lirac is one of 13 crus in the Rhone Valley and it sits opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape , across the River Rhone. Lirac is made from Grenache (70%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvèdre (10%). Dark red colour, black red fruit, dried woody herbs, peppery tannins and a good overall structure. The 2020 will age until 2030 – 32. Really great value.

Chateau Mont Redon
Chateau Mont-Redon will be familiar to those who know and love Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines, being well recognised as the owners of one of the most highly regarded vineyard sites in the appellation. The superb quality of its vineyards has been recognized throughout history and prior to the adaptation of the appellation controlee system it was one of the few ‘Grand Crus’ in the region (together with Chateau Rayas). With almost 100 hectares of Chateauneuf-du-Pape under vine, the majority of Mont-Redon’s vineyards are located in the appellation’s most favoured area, the high plateau, which is covered in the large round pudding stones that Châteauneuf is so well known for. These stones are called 'galets' and their job is to retain and reflect the warmth from the sun. At this high point, the huge pudding stone galets lie over a rich layer of clay which retains water and keeps the earth below cool. This helps the vines to resist the torrid heat of each summer. In the 1960’s, some of the limestone terroir on the western edge of the appellation was planted to white varieties which are perfectly suited to limestone, because it is known for producing whites of great freshness and purity. This remarkable property is in fact a single vineyard which is very unusual in Châteauneuf-du-Pape where holdings are usually quite scattered. There has been considerable investment at Mont-Redon over the past twenty years. The entire winery has been completely renewed and is now naturally climate controlled, utilising the water that lies deep below the clay plateau. From this water, cool air spills down into the winery cooling every level so that the whole winery retains a very cool temperature with natural humidity. Rows of oak barriques have replaced the old large foudres of yesteryear, and large temperature controlled stainless steel vats now line the walls, resulting in wines of freshness and finesse in both red and white wines. More recently optical sorting machines at harvest time have helped to remove any unripe or shriveled grapes as well as any vegetation resulting in great precision for every single wine. In recent years the developments have continued at a great pace with Pierre Fabre being installed as wine-maker from 2008 and in 2017 Pierre took over management of the estate from his father and uncle. In 2017, he produced the first Gigondas from purchased fruit and in 2019, he purchased more vineyards in the southern Rhône. This remarkable estate will continue to develop at a fast pace, as the potential of its great terroir is realised under the guardianship of Pierre Fabre. Mont-Redon is clearly a candidate for not only the most improved producer and the best value producer of the Southern Rhone, but now also one the very best producers in the large historic appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Mont-Redon looks destined to become one of the highest achievers of the Rhone Valley in the coming decade.

About Grenache & Grenache blends
Grenache is grown around the world and it is mostly known as a blending partner with other grape varieties. However, when it is made into a varietal wine on it's own, Grenache can produce a richly flavoured red wine that shows an abundance of red berries and delicious peppery spices. Some of the finest wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, in the Southern Rhone, are made from 100% Grenache. Other great wines from this region are made from Grenache blended with Syrah and Mourvedre. These iconic wines are also full-bodied, rich and textural with a concentration of spicy red fruit aromas and flavours. In Spain, Grenache is known as Garnacha and it is used in blends with Tempranillo, from regions such as Priorat and Rioja. Outside of Europe, some of the world's highest quality Grenache wines are made in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, as well as other Australian regions. Made from old bush vines, these wines are known for their impressive concentration of ripe fruit flavours and their overall approachability. Being a late ripening grape, Grenache needs to be planted in warm or hot climates.
About Rhone wines & Rhone style blends
The Rhone Valley is one of France's most spectacular wine regions. Set on the banks of the River Rhone, this incredible wine region features The Northern Rhone and The Southern Rhone. In the The Northern Rhone, the only permitted red wine grape is Syrah (Shiraz), whereas The Southern Rhone is mostly known for producing Grenache, with Shiraz and Mourvedre playing a supporting role. Syrah from the Northern Rhone is deeply coloured with high levels of tannin and ripe aromas and flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and black pepper. Grenache from the Southern Rhone can be full-bodied, quite ripe and show spiced red fruit flavours such as cranberry and red plum. It also blends beautifully with Syrah and Mourvedre. Both regions also make beautiful white wines such as Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne, as well as dry Rosé. However, the red wines from the Rhone Valley are distinctively powerful and they underpin the reputation of the Rhone Valley, around the world. So too, are the Rhone style red wines that produced in Australia, in regions such as The Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. The Rhone Valley has been a significant source of inspiration to Australian winemakers, who are also known around the world for making powerful Shiraz, Grenache or Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre (GSM) blends.
About Southern Rhone
The Southern Rhone is a very significant wine region in France, second only to Bordeaux, in terms of the quality and the volume of the wine it produces. Most of the Southern Rhone wines are complex blends that involve Grenache whereas the Northern Rhone wines feature Shiraz blends more predominantly. The Cotes du Rhone is a large wine growing appellation that sits within the Southern Rhone wine region. This is where the 'entry level' AOC wines (Appellation d'Origine Controlee), of the region are made, providing delightful and approachable red wines that are sold around the world. The climate in the Southern Rhone is classified as moderate to warm 'Mediterranean' due to the warmer winters and long, dry Summers. Grenache is the main red grape variety, comprising 2/3 of production in the Southern Rhone mostly because it is so hardy and it can withstand the drier conditions. In general, Grenache displays spiced red fruit such as raspberry, cherry, clove, white pepper and cardamom. The more sophisticated wines, from Chateauneuf du Pape, show aromas and flavours of licorice, leather, earth and garrigue. Historically, the region was also known for the number of Popes who were 'seated' in the region, hence the term 'Pape' in Chateauneuf du Pape.

About Rhone Valley
The Rhone Valley is an Appellation d'origine controlee (AOC, or controlled designation of origin) wine region running roughly 200 km south of Lyon, in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes administrative region in the central-southeast of France. Although strictly one region, the Rhone realistically can be split neatly into two the north and south. In Northern Rhone, Syrah is king, with famous appellations such as Cote Rotie, Hermitage, St-Joseph, Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage producing stunning wines along with lighter tones from the whites based around Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from Condrieu, Chateau Grillet, St-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Peray. In Southern Rhone, Syrah combines with Grenache and Mourvedre in the enchanting wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and the eminently drinkable wines of Cotes du Rhone. With its diversity of terroir and famous appellations, the Rhone Valley gives the wine-lover a great range of wine styles from some of the world's most famous sub regions.
