Expert Reviews & Awards
"From a selection from the oldest blocks, planted 1998; 115, 2051 and MV6 clones; 20% whole bunches; matured 12 months in 10% new French oak puncheons. There is a lively, energetic jubilance to this cool season, which sits neatly in the spicy black fruit depth of well-established vines. Whole bunches come to the party with their signature, spicy, floral overtones. Chiselled and linear, it's confidently built for the cellar." 93 points (on the 2021 vintage).
Halliday Wine Companion - August 2022 (TS) — 93 Points
"Estate vineyard, Coal River Valley. Wild-yeast fermentation with no whole bunches. Matured 10 months in 15% new French oak puncheons. Judicious fruit selection elevates Clarence House's Reserve to greater depth and length of black-fruit presence. Black cherries and blackberries are brushed with white pepper and beetroot. Anna Pooley's wizardry in the winery intricately marries fine-grained tannins and bright acidity on a long finish. Elegance meets class in a deliciously age-worthy package." 95 points (On the 2020 vintage).

Clarence House Estate
This small vineyard is located just north of Hobart on a perfectly positioned north-east facing slope. The beautiful old Georgian homestead of Clarence House was built in 1830 at Clarence Plains, Mt Rumney, has been maintained in its original splendor surrounded by beautiful gardens, and in 1998 present owner David Kilpatrick began planting vines on the north east sloping block facing Mount Rumney just below the Coal River Valley. Over 8 hectares of the total 12 hectares of plantings consists of pinot noir and chardonnay, with the remainder including pinot blanc, sauvignon blanc, merlot and tempranillo. All wines are now made by Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb at the nearby Pooley cellar in Cambridge.

About Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of the world's most loved, light bodied red wines. Pinot Noir can be made into a variety wine styles, from light and fruity styles featuring cherry and strawberry notes to more complex, gamey and earthy styles. Pinot Noir is usually higher in acid and lower in tannin, making it an ideal pairing for lighter, fattier foods duck, cheese and lamb. Often, the region defines the style. Along with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir is the main grape variety in Burgundy, where the cooler climate produces highly prized wines, loved throughout history of drinking wine! Germany is also known for high quality Pinot Noir, produced in the cooler regions of Pfalz and Baden. As well as France and Germany, the 'new world' wine countries such as the USA, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand also produce high quality Pinot Noir. The list of top Pinot Noir regions in the world includes; Sonoma County, Carneros, Santa Barbara County and Oregon (USA), Casablanca (Chile), Walker Bay (South Africa), Marlborough and Central Otago (New Zealand). Australia also has pockets of high quality Pinot Noir in multiple regions but some of the best Pinot Noir wines are made in the Yarra Valley, Tasmania, The Mornington Peninsula and the Adelaide Hills.
