Clos des Papes is not only regarded as the benchmark producer of the appellation but is also frequently recognised as being one of the leading estates of all France. This Chateauneuf du Pape magnum will provide for incredible drinking pleasure for up to 25 years after release, one of the reasons that these wines are in such high demand.
Expert Reviews & Awards
'Beguiling, with a plume of black tea and incense leading off, followed by black cherry reduction, cassis, melted black licorice, warm earth, singed tobacco and garrigue accents. Offers breadth and depth with a seamless feel, capped by a subtle mineral edge that lingers lengthily amid the beautiful fruit. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2040. 8,000 cases.'(97 points on the 2020 vintage)
Wine Spectator - January 2023 -
'Proprietor Paul-Vincent Avril expects to bottle 100,000 bottles of something approximating this "final blend," tasted out of foudre. A blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah and other permitted varieties, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looked exceptional on this day, offering up scents of framboise and kirsch alongside dried flowers and Asian spices. Full-bodied yet weightless, silky and long, this is special stuff, complex and balanced.'
The Wine Advocate - May 2022 - Joe Czerwinski 96-98 points

About Grenache & Grenache blends
Grenache is grown around the world and it is mostly known as a blending partner with other grape varieties. However, when it is made into a varietal wine on it's own, Grenache can produce a richly flavoured red wine that shows an abundance of red berries and delicious peppery spices. Some of the finest wines from Chateauneuf du Pape, in the Southern Rhone, are made from 100% Grenache. Other great wines from this region are made from Grenache blended with Syrah and Mourvedre. These iconic wines are also full-bodied, rich and textural with a concentration of spicy red fruit aromas and flavours. In Spain, Grenache is known as Garnacha and it is used in blends with Tempranillo, from regions such as Priorat and Rioja. Outside of Europe, some of the world's highest quality Grenache wines are made in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, as well as other Australian regions. Made from old bush vines, these wines are known for their impressive concentration of ripe fruit flavours and their overall approachability. Being a late ripening grape, Grenache needs to be planted in warm or hot climates.
About Southern Rhone
The Southern Rhone is a very significant wine region in France, second only to Bordeaux, in terms of the quality and the volume of the wine it produces. Most of the Southern Rhone wines are complex blends that involve Grenache whereas the Northern Rhone wines feature Shiraz blends more predominantly. The Cotes du Rhone is a large wine growing appellation that sits within the Southern Rhone wine region. This is where the 'entry level' AOC wines (Appellation d'Origine Controlee), of the region are made, providing delightful and approachable red wines that are sold around the world. The climate in the Southern Rhone is classified as moderate to warm 'Mediterranean' due to the warmer winters and long, dry Summers. Grenache is the main red grape variety, comprising 2/3 of production in the Southern Rhone mostly because it is so hardy and it can withstand the drier conditions. In general, Grenache displays spiced red fruit such as raspberry, cherry, clove, white pepper and cardamom. The more sophisticated wines, from Chateauneuf du Pape, show aromas and flavours of licorice, leather, earth and garrigue. Historically, the region was also known for the number of Popes who were 'seated' in the region, hence the term 'Pape' in Chateauneuf du Pape.

About Rhone Valley
The Rhone Valley is an Appellation d'origine controlee (AOC, or controlled designation of origin) wine region running roughly 200 km south of Lyon, in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes administrative region in the central-southeast of France. Although strictly one region, the Rhone realistically can be split neatly into two the north and south. In Northern Rhone, Syrah is king, with famous appellations such as Cote Rotie, Hermitage, St-Joseph, Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage producing stunning wines along with lighter tones from the whites based around Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from Condrieu, Chateau Grillet, St-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Peray. In Southern Rhone, Syrah combines with Grenache and Mourvedre in the enchanting wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and the eminently drinkable wines of Cotes du Rhone. With its diversity of terroir and famous appellations, the Rhone Valley gives the wine-lover a great range of wine styles from some of the world's most famous sub regions.
